I'll be the first to tell you that I try not to think much about my technique when I'm standing up to hit my driver. I'm a feel player so I just want to feel comfortable over the ball.
It's all about what kind of shot I want to hit and I never put the tee in the ground without knowing what kind of shot I want to hit, to see its shape through the air.
If I want to play a fade I tee the ball a little bit lower. If I want to hit a big one to a par-5 with a wide open fairway I tee it higher. The ball position is always the same opposite the heel of my left foot.
Another important thing I do is to hold the clubhead just a little about the ground at address. I hover the club because it helps me to move my left shoulder around my body. In the past when have I rested the driver clubhead on the ground I make mistakes because putting it on the ground made the first move to lift up the clubhead.
I have found that my swing is very smooth when I hover the club. It makes the golf swing a lot easier and helps to free the swing. It is a good tip for amateur players who make divots with their tee shots. Keep the club up and it will help to get rid of that makes the take-away more smooth.
