The Open: Dustin Johnson admits it's 'going to suck' watching Ryder Cup at home

Former World No.1 Dustin Johnson has also revealed when he'll leave the LIV Golf League.

Dustin Johnson says it's 'going to suck' watching the Ryder Cup at home.

Former World No.1 Johnson was always viewed as unlikely candidate to be part of Keegan Bradley's dozen this September.

The 41-year-old has struggled in the major championships since he decamped to LIV Golf in June 2022.

And his woes have continued this year, with missed cuts at The Masters, PGA Championship and US Open.

Johnson bucked the trend this week here at Royal Portrush with rounds of 71-69 to have a weekend tee time at The Open.

But, according to comments made to The Athletic, Johnson appears to believe that this will be his last big event of 2025.

"Believe me, I would love to play on the Ryder Cup team," Johnson told the publication after his second round.

"Obviously, the Ryder Cup is one of my favourite events on the planet. So, yeah, it's going to suck watching it from home."

Johnson has made four appearances in the biennial contest to date.

Undeniably, the standout moment of his Ryder Cup career came four years ago at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Johnson became part of an exclusive group of players to claim a 100 per cent win rate, with victories in all five of his matches.

Few would have expected Johnson not to be involved in any Ryder Cup since.

"I just haven’t played well enough this year," Johnson added.

"If I had played better, then, I think I'd have a serious consideration of being on the team, but you never know. A really good weekend could change things."

Johnson has always been of the mind set that he will not play senior golf.

Contract lengths on the PIF-backed breakaway have been the source of debate for many months.

Bryson DeChambeau has confirmed he's in negotiations with LIV about extending his deal and there are rumours Brooks Koepka is unhappy.

Johnson said he won't be leaving LIV Golf anytime soon.

"I'll be with them for a few more years," he said.

"I'm with them for a few more years, really pleased with how it's going. I think it's only getting better, and I'm looking forward to what's to come."

Future major championships

Former green jacket winner Johnson is exempt into The Masters for life.

But qualifying for future major championships may prove difficult for Johnson.

He needed a special exemption to get into this year's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

And his 10-year exemption for winning the 2016 US Open at Oakmont expires next year.

That means he'll have to qualify for both the US Open and The Open.

The R&A and USGA announced formal pathways for LIV golfers in February but Johnson is of the view that he won't take part in qualifiers.

"But you never know. I mean, if it works out in the schedule, and I’m not in the Open, I want to play here, and I want to be here playing," Johnson said.

"So I would definitely think about it. But if I play well and I play how I should, I'll be in the Open next year."
