The Open: Jordan Spieth shares what makes Claret Jug winner Scottie Scheffler so good

Jordan Spieth pointed to Scottie Scheffler's ability to detach himself from family and golf as the American moved one step closer to completing the career grand slam.

Jordan Spieth says what makes 's--- talking' Scottie Scheffler so good is the fact he doesn't care to be a superstar.

Scheffler cruised to his first Open Championship title on Sunday with a commanding performance at Royal Portrush.

The 28-year-old American began the day with a four-shot lead and, despite a wobble at the eighth, regained his composure with mistake-free back nine.

Scheffler's 72-hole total of 17-under saw him win by by four strokes from Harris English.

He now needs to win the US Open to complete the career grand slam, having previously won two Masters titles and the PGA Championship.

Spieth, who finished in a share of 40th place at the final men's major of the year, believes there is one reason why Scheffler is so imperious.

"He doesn't care to be a superstar," Spieth said.

"He's not transcending the game like Tiger did. He's not bringing it to a non-golf audience necessarily.

"He doesn't want to go do the stuff that a lot of us go do, corporately, anything like that.

"He just wants to get away from the game and separate the two because I know that he - at one time, he felt it was too much, that he was taking it with him, and whenever he made that switch, I don't know what it was, but he has hobbies. He's always with his family. They're always doing stuff."

Spieth said Scheffler has a unique ability to detach.

"I see him here and there off the course, but when we're playing on the course at home, he s--- talks," Spieth said.

"He's very witty. You can't really go at him because he's smart, and he's got good bulls---."

So what kind of stuff does Scheffler say?

"I mean, it's not necessarily just to me," Spieth said.

"It's normally the other people that we're playing with. But yeah, not that I want to say it - I'm not going to quote him on that kind of stuff.

"But then when a tournament starts, he's incredibly competitive, as you see. But it also - he's kind of plotting along.

"You won't see that much emotion as he continues to strike it like this because the only time you're going to see it is when he's on the greens if he misses putts because he's not missing many shots.

"I wouldn't necessarily think that the golf swing makes as much of a difference as the personality match.

"I'm thinking about so many other sports, and Nikola Jokic is the only guy I can think of that's a superstar that's equally unassuming in any sport in the modern era."

Scheffler's Open victory was his second major title of 2025.

In May, Scheffler captured the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

He is now a four-time major champion, as well as an Olympic gold medallist.

Providing Scheffler stays injury-free, the golfer will have a chance to complete the career grand slam next June at the U.S. Open.

Scheffler turns 30 that week.
