McIlroy splits the fairway and then fires a dart into six feet short of the hole on the lengthy par-4 4th.
The home favourite then drains the birdie putt to huge cheers and cries of 'Rory, Rory, Rory...'
It's a third birdie in four holes for the career grand slam champion.

English knocks in a six footer for birdie at the par-4 1st.
Henley -6 (12)
Henley is making the biggest move of the day so far.
The American has just eagled the par-5 12th to move to 6-under for the round and the championship.
Henley will very much be assured of a place in the US Ryder Cup team this September.

McIlroy finds the green with his tee shot at the par-3 3rd but comes up well shy of the pin.
He thumps his 50 footer up the hill to a few feet and then knocks in the par save.
McIlroy remains five back.

McIlroy finds the first cut of rough with his tee shot and then sends a brilliant second shot from 260 yards into the heart of the green.
He leaves his eagle putt in the jaws from 35 feet but taps in for a second consecutive birdie.
McIlroy to 5-under par and now just five shots back of Scheffler, who has yet to tee off.

DeChambeau card a 68 to move to 2-under par.
He won't be winning his first Open, but after his shocking 78 to start the week it's been some recovery from him.
Just over an hour to go until Scheffler and Fitzpatrick tee off in the final pairing of the third round.

The defending champ two putts for birdie on the easy par-5 2nd.
Still a long way back though.
DeChambeau -2 (14)
Bryson DeChambeau made his second bogey of the day at the par-3 13th, but he makes amends immediately with a birdie at the next hole.
Fleetwood -2 (3*)
Tommy Fleetwood got off to a rough start by dropping a stroke at the 1st, but he bounces back in some style by recording the first eagle of the day at the 2nd.

As one would expect, Bryson is on the green in two strokes at the par-5 12th.
But he walks off the green without a birdie.
He misjudges the pace with his eagle effort, then pushes his birdie putt right.
The World No.1 arrives at Royal Portrush and he looks remarkably relaxed.
And why wouldn't he be? This is his domain.
Johnson -2 (7*)
DJ rolls in another birdie putt at the 6th to move to 2-under for the championship.
The conditions are perfect at the moment and the big American is taking advantage.
DeChambeau -2 (11*)
DeChambeau has moved up into a tie for 20th on the leaderboard with a cracking front nine.
Hovland -2 (4*)
Impressive start by the Norwegian, who finds back-to-back birdies at the 2nd and 3rd.
Jason Kokrak and Lucas Glover are the next group out, followed by Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas.
Fleetwood said it was an honour to play the first two rounds of The Open alongside Ireland's hero Rory McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman will tee off at 2.30pm with England's Jordan Smith.

Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland both make pars on their first hole of the day.
H. Stenson -3 (10*)
Henrik Stenson, who won the Claret Jug all those years ago with that duel over Phil Mickelson, is making a nice move today.
