Scottie Scheffler moves one leg away from career grand slam with victory at The Open

Open Championship Final Round Leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler wins The Open for the first time in his career.

Scottie Scheffler has won The Open for the first time in his career at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Scheffler, 29, closed with a steady round of 68 on the Dunluce Links to finish 17-under par and see out a commanding four-shot victory over his compatriot Harris English.

The win marks a fourth major title of Scheffler's career and his fourth win of the 2025 PGA Tour season.

Scheffler also now moves to within one leg of completing the career grand slam.

The American has two Masters titles, a PGA Championship and now an Open Championship to his name.

Scheffler will have a chance to achieve golf immortality, just as Rory McIlroy did at The Masters in April, when he rocks up at Shinnecock Hills for the US Open next June.

If you believe in fate, the final round of the 2026 US Open falls on Scheffler's 30th birthday.

Only six golfers in the modern era have completed the career grand slam (McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen).

Scheffler now becomes the fourth player to win The Masters, PGA and The Open all before the age of 30, joining Woods, Nicklaus and Player.

Last week's Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup continued his impressive recent form with a solo third finish at The Open.

Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick and Haotong Li rounded out the top five on 11-under par.

Home favourite Rory McIlroy failed to ignite for much of the final round and his closing round of 69 saw him finish tied seventh on 10-under par alongside defending champion Xander Schauffele and Robert MacIntyre.

LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau vaulted up the board with a brilliant 64 to finish the week in tied 10th on 9-under par.

An incredible result given he started the week with a disastrous 78, his worst opening score at at major.

A birdie finally drops for Rory McIlroy

Contrasting fortunes for McIlroy and Fitzpatrick at the 15h.

Scheffler ticks off another par

Scheffler -17, Li -9 (14)

Scottie Scheffler finds fairway and green in regulation and two-putts for a par.

He's getting closer now.

Li, meanwhile, makes a complete hash of the 14th.

His tee shot found the fairway bunker and, from there, could only advance his golf ball about 100 yards.

His third sailed through the green and, after eventually finding the putting surface, he two putts for an ugly double bogey six to drop way down the leaderboard.

17:40
Not Rory McIlroy's day

McIlroy -9, Fitzpatrick -10 (13)

There's still huge crowds following Rory McIlroy, who want to see a few more birdies from their man to close out the 2025 Open.

Another chance goes begging at the 13th.

Relentless Scottie Scheffler

Pars for McIlroy and Fitzpatrick

McIlroy -9, Fitzpatrick -10 (13)

Rory McIlroy needs birdies.

A so-so 7-iron finds the middle of the green. It's an outside look at a two.

Birdie chance for Scheffler

Scheffler -16, Li -11 (12*)

Li and Scheffler have a crack at the 12th green in two strokes.

Both miss, and it's Scheffler who has the easier chance to get up and down for a birdie.

Li elects to putt up and over the mound and races it by some 30 feet.

Scheffler chips to about eight feet or so.

17:14
Gotterup gets to 12-under

English -11, Gotterup -12 (13)

English and Gotterup both have makeable birdie putts at the par-3 13th.

Gotterup is the only one to walk off the green with a two.

17:10
McIlroy gets one back

McIlroy -9, Fitzpatrick -10 (12)

Rory McIlroy produced the fireworks here yesterday by jarring a 56-eagle putt.

He's four feet closer today, but this one doesn't drop. It's a simple birdie for McIlroy, though, and he gets one stroke back.

Fitzpatrick settles with a par.

Eagle drops for Harris English!

English -11, Gotterup -11 (12)

Let's check in with some of the chasers.

Harris English and Chris Gotterup, who won the Scottish Open last week, both have eagle putts at the 12th.

English goes first from 32 feet... it's in! Where did that come from?

Gotterup will be kicking himself though, as his effort never had a chance.

He tidies up his birdie.
