Ryder Cup 2025 Singles: Europe stutter to victory after epic USA fightback

Europe held off a momentous fightback from Team USA to retain the Ryder Cup in an epic final-day battle at Bethpage Black.

Shane Lowry was the man to make sure the trophy would remain in Luke Donald's hands, the big Irishman dancing with delight after making a clutch birdie on the 18th to snatch a tie with Russell Henley.

And in match 10, Tyrrell Hatton's tied match with Collin Morikawa secured outright victory as Europe stumbled over the line, with the final score being 15-13.

Several of Donald's senior players ran out of steam on a tension-packed Sunday in New York, with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm running on empty after playing five gruelling sessions.

The projected record-breaking victory looked on in the early stages as Europe led in the top five matches, with Matt Fitzpatrick storming into a 5-hole lead over Bryson DeChambeau approaching the turn.

But Ludvig Aberg was the only player to notch a victory throughout the day as Justin Rose, Fleetwood and McIlroy were all pipped at the final hole, while DeChambeau pulled off a sensational comeback to tie his thrilling encounter with Fitzpatrick.

Rose came back from 3-down against Cameron Young, only for the American to birdie the last and Justin Thomas did the same to earn victory over Fleetwood.

McIlroy looked jaded from the start against world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who managed to avoid becoming the first American player to lose five out of five matches in a single Ryder Cup, clinching a 1up win over the world No 2.

Aberg's lone victory proved priceless, as did the half-point that was enforced before the start of play when Viktor Hovland was forced to pull out of his singles match against Harris English due to his neck injury that worsened overnight.

Lowry was 2 down with 4 to play in match 8 against Henley, but the former Open champion reduced the arrears at 15 and stepped up for his team at the last, rattling in a 6-foot putt for birdie to ensure the valuable 14th point.

Hatton made certain of the outright win, and Bob MacIntyre also won the 18th to tie his match with Sam Burns as the New York fans departed Bethpage in droves, not wishing to hang around and watch Europe celebrate their first win on American soil since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.
