Sergio Garcia dealt fresh blow in bid to make European Ryder Cup team

LIV Golf star Sergio Garcia suffers latest blow in throwing hat into ring to make 2025 European Ryder Cup team as Spaniard fails to come through U.S. Open qualifier in Dallas.

Sergio Garcia's hopes of making an 11th appearance in the European Ryder Cup team this September have suffered a fresh blow after the LIV Golf star failed to make it through a U.S. Open qualifier in Dallas on Monday.

Garcia, 45, went as far to say he would tell 2025 European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald "to not pick me" after he finished well down the leaderboard on 7-over par at the PGA Championship on Sunday.

It was a rollercoaster week for Garcia, who received an 'special exemption' into golf's second major of the season, with rounds of 75, 68, 79 and 69.

Garcia knows as a result of him being a LIV Golf player and not receiving Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points on the breakaway league that he needs to take advantage of his major starts.

But he hasn't.

Garcia missed the cut at The Masters (he was eligible as a past champion) in April.

He then finished T67 at the PGA Championship last week.

And now Garcia has failed to make it into the U.S. Open field from 12-15 June.

The Spaniard was one of 86 participants in a 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.

Garcia started brightly with a 65 in the first round.

But he then posted a 71 in the second round to the miss out on the seven qualifying spots by one shot.

It ends a 25-year appearance streak for Garcia in the U.S. Open.

Garcia will get one more crack to compete in a major this season at The Open at Royal Portrusth from 17-20 July.

In order for that to happen he will need to come through one of The Open final qualifying events on 1 July.

Garcia recently paid off his fines on the DP World Tour - as a result of his allegiance to the LIV Golf League - and GolfMagic understands he is expected to return to the former European Tour circuit at the BMW International Open in Munich from 3-6 July.

July could therefore be a very busy month for Garcia, if indeed he intends to throw his hat into the ring for one of Donald's six captain's picks in the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

The 2017 Masters champion will be playing in a handful of DP World Tour events this summer in order to give captain Donald something to think about at least.

That will of course be on top of the remaining LIV Golf League events he has on the schedule.

Donald recently admitted that he has been watching a lot of LIV Golf coverage lately to keep tabs on the progress of the likes of Garcia, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

Garcia certainly knows he has experience on his side when it comes to the Ryder Cup.

The 38-time professional winner has played on 10 European Ryder Cup teams.

Garcia is also the all-time Ryder Cup record points scorer with 28.5 points.

Should Garcia go on to make this year's team then he will join Sir Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood for most appearances on a European Ryder Cup team with 11

Garcia admitted on Sunday night at the PGA Championship that if Donald's picks were to be named right now, then he would simply tell the Englishman to not even bother picking him.

"It is there if I play better," admitted Garcia when the subject of Ryder Cup arose with a pool of reporters after the final round of the US PGA.

"Obviously the way I'm playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no.

"So obviously I need to get better. I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help the Team Europe. It's as simple as that.

"The good thing is that there's still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalized. So you know, I'll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game."

Garcia, who won his second career title on LIV Golf earlier this season in Korea, will be looking to pick up at least one more victory before September.

Denmark's Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen topped the board in the Dallas U.S. Open qualifier on 11-under par.

He will now make his major debut at the U.S. Open.

James Hahn, Adam Schenk, Lance Simpson (a), Cameron Tankersley, Carlos Ortiz and Johnny Keefer also made it through.

The Dallas event marked one of three U.S. Open qualifers that took place on Monday 19 May.

Jordan Smith topped the board over at the U.S. Open qualifier at Walton Heath in England.

Smith was one of eight qualifiers there.

Yuta Suguira, Scott Vincent and Jinichiro Kozuma earned three qualifying spots in Japan.
