You can drive the ball as accurately and as long as you like, but if you reach the green and you take three or four shots from the fringe then it was all for nothing.

It is important to take into account the many variables that go into chipping, such as the length of the shot, the severity of the slope and the speed of the greens.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout is currently ranked first in strokes gained around the green on the PGA Tour, while World No.1 Dustin Johnson is ranked 10th.

Here are three easy tips to help you with your chipping.

#1 Practise drill

On the practise ground, you can do a simple drill that will help with the tempo of your chipping stroke. When you set up to the ball, take your right hand away and just use your left hand to chip the ball.

This backhand-style stroke will help you to make a steady shot, as you will be so focused on pulling the club back in a straight line. When you return to using two hands, you will hopefully feel the benefit and make a solid chipping stroke.

#2 Make your backswing as long as your follow-through

Distance control is important with chipping and as much as it is important to make your ball reach the hole, you don't want to be over-aggressive either.

To regulate your distance control, make sure that your backswing is the same length as your follow-through. This will ensure that your stroke is consistent and your chipping will be as well.

#3 Pick a spot to land the ball

When you are chipping, you need to think about where the ball will land and how far it will roll. This can be based on the weather conditions and how fast the greens are.

During your set-up, you should pick a spot where you want to bounce the ball and where you think it will perfectly roll out to the hole. You should forget about the flagstick and just focus on the spot you have selected.
