Second bogey of the day for Rory McIlroy

Not a great tee shot from McIlroy at 14 and he's in the thick fescue.

He departs the hole with a bogey.

Xander Schauffele tidies up his par.

Morikawa also notches a par.

19:22
Birdies dry up for McIlroy at 14

Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele crunch drives off the 14th tee.

Every player has a crack at the green.

Morikawa has an eagle putt and Schauffele hits his left.

McIlroy is short and needs to navigate the mounds to try and make up and down for a birdie.

From 20 feet, McIlroy's putt just dribbles left at the end and it will be a safe par.

Schauffele gets down in two for a birdie, as does Morikawa.

Morikawa needs to get a move on if he is to make the weekend.

McIlroy -10

Morikawa +2

Schauffele -5

Lowry is not done just yet...

Shane Lowry picks up a birdie at the 12th hole and gets to 4-under par.

He's playing with Viktor Hovland who is at 7-under and Justin Thomas who is 2-under par.

19:06
Cameron Young finishes strong

Cameron Young posts 69 and closes with a birdie on the 18th to move to 11-under par and two behind Cameron Smith.

Meanwhile Bob MacIntyre can only watch on as his birdie putt that would have guaranteed him a spot over the weekend just misses.

Still, he's level par for the championship.

That should be good enough, though!

Three in a row for Rory McIlroy

That was a long wait to play that hole as Xander Schauffele figured out what to do.

Both Morikawa and Schauffele end up making bogey.

Morikawa moves to 2-over whilst Schauffele drops to 5-under.

But McIlroy gets to 10-under with the most straightforward of birdies.

Budge up Cameron Young, there's a Northern Irishman who wants to join you...

Some notable names who are missing the weekend...

The projected cut is level par and there are a number of big name players who have disappointed this week:

Max Homa +1

Webb Simpson +1

Henrik Stenson +1

Padraig Harrington +6

Brooks Koepka +4

Phil Mickelson +5

Tiger Woods +9

Xander Schauffele is in a world of pain right now

There's a hold up at the 12th hole as Xander Schauffele hits his tee shot wildly right into a gorse bush.

He's also got a grandstand in front of him so he's unsure what to do.

He calls over the referee and a lengthy back-and-forth follows.

The American negotiates with the referee about whether or not he can hit the ball or not.

Schauffele thinks that it is unplayable.

"I don't think that's reasonable," said the referee.

"You guys hit astonishing shots. But that would be an unbelievable shot."

In the end, another referee agrees and Schauffele goes back in line with where his ball entered the bush for a one-stroke penalty.

18:41
Cameron Smith breaks 36-hole record...

Cameron Smith's 64 today sees him play his first 36 holes in 131 strokes.

That is a record for a St Andrews Open.

Just superb stuff!

More like it from Hovland!

Viktor Hovland is playing far better this week and he makes his fourth birdie of the day on the par-4 10th hole!

The three-time PGA Tour winner moves to 8-under-par for the week and he is now only five shots behind...

18:19
Rory makes BACK-TO-BACK birdies!

It's a fantastic birdie on the 11th hole for Rory McIlroy!

On this tough par-3 with a tight pin, the four-time major champion hit one tight to 15 feet and rolled in the putt.

He is now on 9-under-par and level with Dustin Johnson, four shots behind Cameron Smith...

18:11
Rory adds a birdie on the 10th!

Rory McIlroy is going along quietly and calmly and he has found his third birdie of the second round on the 10th hole.

The Northern Irishman is 2-under for his round and 8-under-par for the championship.

He is five shots behind Cameron Smith and very much in the hunt for his second Claret Jug...

Young falls three back again...

After a disappointing approach to the 15th hole, Cameron Young fails to get up and down and he makes his second bogey of the week.

The potential Rookie of the Year is now back to 10-under-par, three shots behind Cameron Smith...

18:04
Mickelson misses another cut...

Despite making a great birdie at the final hole on the Old Course, Phil Mickelson carded a 77 which included four bogeys and a double-bogey.

Lefty bogeyed the road hole having hit his second shot on to the road. Nonetheless, he received warm applause from the patrons.

Will Mickelson be allowed to play the 151st Open at Hoylake?

A statement from Tiger Woods...

Tiger Woods has posted his thoughts after missing the cut at The 150th Open Championship...

17:46
Young closes the gap...

Cameron Young has played very well today and he's rolled in another birdie on the 11th hole to reach 11-under-par.

He is yet to win on the PGA Tour, but he has a great chance to win his maiden title at the greatest venues of them all.

Smith still leads by two shots on 13-under...

17:41
Phil Mickelson is struggling...

Phil Mickelson finds himself on the road on the famous 17th hole at St Andrews, but he misjudges his chip.

His shot goes through the green and down the bottom of the slope and he is looking at even more dropped shots.

Lefty is currently 5-over for the championship...

Eagle (!) for Cameron Smith at 14..

Oh my word Cameron Smith.

He finds the putting surface in two shots at the par-5 14th and has a long putt for eagle.

He's already had six birdies today so you would have bet on him making another.

But no, he just drops that thing right in the heart and moves three clear!

Wow. Wow. Wow.

What a putt.

Is this his time?!

17:17
Rory on the charge

No joy for Collin Morikawa at the seventh. He's hanging around the cut mark and his putt burns the edge.

Xander Schauffele got a good read off Morikawa's putt, but his putt just bleeds off to the left at the last second and he'll remain at 5-under.

What about McIlroy? Of course he makes it.

Straight to 8-under par for Rors and he's into a tie for fourth!

17:12
Excellent iron striking from McIlroy, Schauffele and Morikawa

Rory McIlroy crunched his drive down the seventh and gives himself a fantastic angle from 101 yards.

And it's brilliant, brilliant stuff from the Northern Irishman as he sends one high over the pin and it nips back for more than a decent look at birdie.

Xander Schauffele, from 95 yards, is equally as good. Morikawa has a decent shout at birdie too.

Three good iron shots...

17:01
No joy for Rory McIlroy at six

Rory McIlroy -6

No joy for the Northern Irishman at the sixth hole. He's in close but his birdie putt slides by.

Xander Schauffele's effort goes close too, but he's not got enough juice on it.

16:58
How is Phil Mickelson getting on?

We haven't checked in with Lefty for a while.

He's 4-over par after 14 holes and will miss the cut here.

It started so well today for the six-time major champion with a birdie at the third but since then he hasn't been able to get anything going.

We'll see him play next at the third LIV Golf event.

16:53
Eagle lands for Justin Thomas

From over par to under par in an instant for Justin Thomas.

He finds the centre of the cup from deep at the fifth hole.

Let's go JT.

16:49
A birdie for the amateur going well

Barclay Brown continues his impressive Open and moves to 5-under par thru 16 holes.

This chap is 21 years old and he's playing like this...

What a hugely impressive display from the Englishman.
