The Open Championship LIVE: Leaderboard, updates | Tiger Woods struggling

Rory McIlroy shoots an opening 6-under 66 to sit two off the lead at the 150th Open Championship as Tiger Woods toils.

Welcome to our live commentary of The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews! We are very excited to be bringing you all of the latest updates and news headlines from the first day's play.

The build-up to the event has been superb with legends and former Open champions such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Gary Player gracing the famous links.

Defending champion Collin Morikawa (72) teed off with Rory McIlroy (66) and Xander Schauffele (69) earlier this morning, beginning his bid to defend the Claret Jug he won at Royal St. George's in 2021.

Three-time Open champion Tiger Woods teed off at 2.59 pm with US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and four-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is playing with Joaquin Niemann and Tyrrell Hatton on a day where we expect to see some low scores carded.

The likes of Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas (72), Cameron Smith (67) and Cameron Young (64) were among the early starters. 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie hit the opening tee shot and carded a 74 on day one.

Fans have been flocking to the tournament throughout the week and they will continue to pour into the Old Course as the day progresses.

Who can stop Scottie Scheffler?!

Scottie Scheffler posts 68-68.

He joins Tyrrell Hatton and Cameron Young at 8-under par.

Here's how Scheffler rated his chances heading into this week.

19:20
Casey's poor finish...

Paul Casey played the first eight holes in 4-under par.

He's home in 39, meaning he will card a 1-under 71.

That'll frustrate the Englishman, given his start.

19:11
Spieth birdies 12!

Spieth makes a birdie with a nice putt from six feet to move back to 2-under.

Jon Rahm hits his lag putt to four feet and tidies up the par.

Nothing much for Harold Varner III today, mind. He's 2-over.

19:08
Ronan Mullarney steaming along...

Ronan Mullarney, ranked 1806 in the world, moves to 3-under thru eight holes.

He secured second place in a 36-hole qualifier.

Now look at him. Wonderful stuff!

19:05
Tiger is furious...

Woods has a great chance for birdie at 12, but misses left from about six feet.

He's really angry with himself. He just can't any momentum going.

Fitzpatrick and Homa remain level par.

18:39
Sergio Garcia goes for the hero shot...

Speaking of LIV Golf, Sergio Garcia goes for the hero shot on the Road Hole and his ball stops well short of its intended target and trickles back towards him.

He's at 1-over par and has work to do to keep it that way.

18:37
LIV Golf's Talor Gooch opens with a 68...

Talor Gooch joined up with LIV Golf then took credit for the prize purse increases announced by the PGA Tour.

He also famously likened the atmosphere of LIV to the Ryder Cup.

He's in the mix here, with a solid opening round of 4-under 68.

18:34
Sahith Theegala turns in 3-under

Sahith Theegala took the place of Daniel Berger at the 150th Open.

Berger has been struggling with a back problem all season.

Theegala either was very confident or thought he'd missed his birdie putt at No. 9.

His golf ball slammed into the middle of the cup and he moves to 3-under.

A great start. This fella has a bright future.

18:29
Sand save of the day...

Si Woo Kim, take a bow.

Par at the Road Hole is never bad.

18:28
Another bogey for Tiger...

Tiger drops back to 5-over.

His par putt at the par-3 11th just misses the left edge.

That was silly, his birdie attempt didn't nearly have enough juice.

18:24
Who is this chap supporting?!

18:21
Jordan Spieth needing another escape...

Jordan Spieth saved par after narrowly avoiding the gorse at the ninth hole, but then moments later has to scream "fore" after hooking his drive way left on his next tee shot.

And his ball ends up on the top of one of the bushes.

He decides not to take the shot on, and takes a penalty drop.

Playing three at the par-4 10th, he puts his ball right of the pin.

It's a safe play but very likely a dropped shot.

18:18
Some notable scores for you...

Brooks Koepka +1

Shane Lowry E

Collin Morikawa E

Tommy Fleetwood E

Patrick Reed E

Phil Mickelson E

Bryson DeChambeau -3

18:14
What about Jon Rahm?

We've not heard too much from Jon Rahm today.

He's made the turn at 1-under with a couple of birdies and a dropped shot at No. 8.

18:10
Back-to-back birdies for big cat!

Tiger Woods just never bloody gives up, does he?!

He's looked so frustrated out there alongside Matthew Fitzpatrick and Max Homa.

But things are slowly turning around for the 15-time major champion.

He's made another birdie at 10 and moves to 4-over.

Things are looking a whole lot better than 20 minutes ago.

18:06

How is Jordan Spieth getting on?

By now, we're sure you've seen Jordan Spieth absolutely devour an ice cream.

I mean, it was truly a bizarre moment.

Who eats a 99 like that?!

Anyway, Spieth is in a bit of trouble at the ninth.

He's faced with a tricky situation just off the green playing his third shot and will have work to do if he is to remain at 2-under.

17:59
DJ on the move...

Dustin Johnson made the turn at 1-under par.

Since then, he's moved up the leaderboard with two more birdies at 11 and 12.

He's just made par at No 13.

Will he be a factor this week?!

17:52
Tiger, finally, gets a birdie...

Tiger Woods has made a birdie.

I repeat, Tiger Woods has made a birdie.

And it's come at the ninth hole.

That moves him back to 5-over par. It's been rough viewing so far for Woods fans.

But after the birdie putt drops, he cracks a smile and gives us a little celebration.

Come on now!

17:49
The afternoon scoring has been slow...

We haven't checked in with Scottie Scheffler for a while.

So far, he's one of the later starters who has muscled himself into contention with holes to play.

He's currently 3-under par after he made bogey at 13, his first of the day.

17:41
Pace of play problems...

Thanks for the valuable updates Matt.

Can we talk for a second about the pace of play today?

It's absolutely shocking.

Woods, Homa and Fitzpatrick have been playing for almost three hours and they've not yet reached the turn.

Ridiculous!

17:20
ANOTHER DOUBLE-BOGEY for Woods...

Things have gone from bad to worse, to very bad for Tiger Woods...

His tee shot on the par-4 7th hole sailed left into a bunker, forcing him to hack out.

His third shot went short of the green and he couldn't get up and down. This led to his second double-bogey of the day.

The 15-time major champion is now 6-over-par after seven holes and he has taken well over two hours to complete this part of the course...

Rahm and Spieth find birdies!

Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth are playing well in the first round of The 150th Open Championship!

Both of these major champions found birdies on the 6th hole to move to 2-under-par.

Rahm is looking for his second major championship, while Spieth is looking for his second Claret Jug...

17:08
Bryson DeChambeau reacts to Bridgestone axing...

Bryson DeChambeau on Bridgestone:

"This is a major championship. I'm going into it with a mindset that I'm focused on trying to win this golf tournament.

"So, it hasn't been on the top of my mind. I've been focused on competing and doing my best out here.

"I love them (Bridgestone). I love what they do. I still will hopefully continue to have conversations with the R&D team all the time.

"I've given them five or six different little things that have helped improve the golf ball. And hopefully will continue to do so.

"I respect it and understand everybody’s position and the ties that everybody has. I respect it."
