Ryder Cup Day 2 scores: Sensational Europe on verge of historic win at Bethpage

A summary of an incredible second day of The 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where Luke Donald's Europe once again outplayed Team USA and stormed into a seven-point lead after dominating both Saturday sessions to stun the New York crowd.

Europe stand on the verge of Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black following another outstanding performance on day 2, opening up a commanding seven-point lead over a deflated Team USA.

Luke Donald's superstars won both of Saturday's sessions 3-1, with Rory McIlroy extending his unbeaten run in the contest despite some fearful abuse from the raucous crowd throughout a one-sided Saturday in New York.

Overall score: USA 4.5-11.5 Europe

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played some inspired golf in the afternoon fourballs as they took down Bryson DeChambeau and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who became first player since 1979 to lose four matches in the first four sessions at the Ryder Cup.

The last match of the day also went Europe's way, with Tyrrell Hatton finding form down the stretch having been brought in as a late replacement for Viktor Hovland, who is a concern for Sunday's singles as he struggles with a neck injury.

When Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick edged out Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns at the last, it ensured that Europe will need just three points from Sunday's 12 singles to clinch the first away victory in the showpiece since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Saturday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

DeChambeau managed to get his first win of the week alongside Cameron Young in the top match, but that was the lone highlight for Team USA as Europe claimed another 3-1 win in the session.

McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood held off a late fightback from Harris English and Collin Morikawa to win 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Hatton won their fifth match together.

The unstoppable LIV Golf pairing also won 3&2 in a high-quality battle against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm pulling off a number of sensational shots along the way.

Scheffler and Russell Henley lost out to Bob MacIntyre and Hovland after a titanic battle in the final foursomes of this contest.

Saturday Fourballs: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Lowry defied the constant abuse from the crowd to hold off Justin Thomas and Cameron Young in a match marred by the unsavoury scenes from outside the ropes.

A number of unruly spectators were removed from the property, while McIlroy refused to putt on the 6th green until order had been restored in the galleries, forcing officials to bring in a battalion of state troopers to stifle the troublemakers.

But Lowry was fired up and took the Irishmen 2 ahead when he eagled the 4th and birdied the 5th, while McIlroy stepped up on the back nine in match of incredible tension.

Rose was also inspired in match 2, the quality of which can be explained by Scheffler and DeChambeau being a combined 9-under par for 16 holes and losing 3&2!

Rose was also involved in an altercation with DeChambeau's caddie, Greg Bodine, on the 15th green which escalated into a blazing row involving players, caddies and vice-captains en route to the 16th tee.

A clean sweep of the fourballs looked on the cards until JJ Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to earn him and Schauffele a 1up victory over Rahm and Sepp Straka, with Rahm losing his first match in fourballs or foursomes since 2018.

But the day finished on yet another high note for the visitors with Hatton making birdies at the final four holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, and after he and Fitzpatrick peppered the pin at the 18th, they snatched Europe's sixth win of another memorable day.

19:42
Cantlay and Burns can't convert

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (5)

Cantlay and Burns both have decent birdie chances at the 5th, but both go begging and that's 5 ties in a row in the final match.

19:40
Huge save from Thomas

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (8)

Thomas and Young both miss the green at the short 8th.

The Irish pair can't quite get their birdie putts to drop, and Thomas holes from 12 feet to snatch a half

19:39
Rose extinguishes the red from the board

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau A/S Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (7)

Rosey is having himself a day. The veteran smacks a stunning approach in close at the 7th, and he rolls it in for another birdie to level match 2

19:38
Still all square in match 3, apparently

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele A/S Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka (5)

The 5th hole was halved, not that we saw it in the UK.

Instead, we were treated to Rory chants by the Ryder Cup Guardians!

19:25
Great putt from Young ignites the crowd

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (7)

McIlroy looks a little forlorn right now, the abuse he's getting is clearly taking a toll.

And Young doesn't help his mood as he rolls in a big putt to halve the European lead.

19:18
Fitzpatrick denied at the 4th

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (4)

Fitzpatrick has a great look at adding his name to the list of eagles made at the 4th.

He scares the hole with his second, but the putt burns the left edge and the bottom match stays all square.

19:16
Class from Rose, again!

1UP Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (6)

Stunning second to 8 feet from Rose at the 6th, one of the shots of the day, for sure.

But he needs to hole it for a half after Scheffler rolls one in from 15 feet.

Rose nails it, and Europe stay just 1 down.

19:11
Another eagle at the 4th

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele A/S Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka (4)

First Lowry, then DeChambeau, now Schauffele makes eagle at the 4th.

And it's a belter, rattling in a monster putt from over 40 feet to draw his team level in match 3

19:06
McIlroy: "I'm, not gonna putt until they shut up"

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 2UP (6)

It's getting out of hand in the top match right now, and McIlroy is refusing to putt on the 6th until the morons in the crowd can learn to be quiet.

Finally, it settles down enough to resume play, and there's big cheers as Rory's long-range putt stays high.

But Lowry steps up again and bins another fine putt for a half, with Young having hit his second to 3 feet.

18:59
DeChambeau on a mission

1UP Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (5)

DeChambeau is playing lights-out golf right now, and the English pair are going to have to dig deep to keep up.

Bryson and Scottie are both in close at the 5th, and it's the LIV star who gets first dibs at winning the hole.

Finally, there's red on the board

18:51
Hovland injury "not serious"

Sky Sports News have confirmed that the decision to withdraw Viktor Hovland from the fourballs was precautionary, and he is expected to be fine for tomorrow's singles.

He's having treatment on a sore neck, but it's not a big issue.

18:50
Lowry is pumped!

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 2UP (5)

Jamie Weir reports that McIlroy and Lowry are still getting "nasty" abuse from outside the ropes, and a couple of spectators have been thrown out.

Lowry's response? Eagle at the 4th, birdie at the 5th. Europe 2up.

18:48
Bad miss from Fitzpatrick

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (2)

Fitzpatrick has hardly put a foot wrong in his first two matches, but he's dropped a clanger here.

The Yorkshireman stiffs his second to 3 feet, but he blocks the putt and it lips out.

18:43
DeChambeau's eagle pulls USA level

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau A/S Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (4)

Fleetwood gives himself an outside chance of matching DeChambeau's eagle, but the putt slides by and the US pair draw level

18:41
Supersub Hatton starts well

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (1)

We're not sure if Hatton had time to warm up before replacing Hovland, nor do we know the severity of Hovland's neck issue.

Whatever the case, Hatton and Burns had the best look at birdie on the 1st green, but both chances are spurned.

18:38
Inches from an albatross!

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose 1UP (3)

Stunning shot from DeChambeau at the long 4th. It's blind and uphill to the green, and Bryson has 193 yards to the pin.

And he hits it exactly 193 yards, and if he'd hit it a couple of inches further left, it would be in the hole!

18:34
The sea of blue continues in match 3

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele v Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka 1UP (2)

It's gone a bit flat at Bethpage now, and a glance at the leaderboard tells you why.

Europe lead in the first 3 matches, with Straka nailing a nice birdie at the 2nd.

Grim reading for USA fans

18:31
Eagle has landed for Lowry

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (4)

There are reports that the crowd are really piling on McIlroy and Lowry in the top match, but they are letting their golf do the talking.

Lowry cracks his second to 20 feet and sinks the putt for eagle, Europe no 1up in the top two matches.

18:28
First blue on the board

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose 1UP (3)

Rose might be the oldest player at Bethpage, but he's a match for anyone on his day.

The 45-year-old drills one to 6 feet at the 3rd, and that's a winning birdie

18:18
Rose rises again to match Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau A/S Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (2)

They're throwing darts at the pin on the 2nd!

Scheffler and Rose both nail pure wedges to 3 feet, and both make birdie to keep match 2 all square

18:15
Hovland withdraws from fourballs

There's a late change to the final fourball match.

We're hearing that Viktor Hovland has a neck injury, so Tyrrell Hatton has been brought in to partner Matt Fitzpatrick.

18:14
Jon Rahm still doing Jon Rahm things

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele A/S Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka (1)

Schauffele knocks it close at the 1st, Rahm - who else - clips his even closer.

Both hole for birdie, easy stuff really!

18:11
Chances go begging

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (3)

McIlroy lags his 30-footer to guarantee a par, Thomas lips out and Young doesn't allow nearly enough break.

That's another let-off for the Irishmen, can they take advantage?

18:05
Thomas and Young pepper the pin at the 3rd

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (2)

McIlroy and Lowry do not threaten the pin at the short 3rd, but the US pair are in close.

They're both inside 10 feet, surely one of them can get a putt to drop?
