Ryder Cup Day 2 scores: Sensational Europe on verge of historic win at Bethpage

A summary of an incredible second day of The 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where Luke Donald's Europe once again outplayed Team USA and stormed into a seven-point lead after dominating both Saturday sessions to stun the New York crowd.

Europe stand on the verge of Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black following another outstanding performance on day 2, opening up a commanding seven-point lead over a deflated Team USA.

Luke Donald's superstars won both of Saturday's sessions 3-1, with Rory McIlroy extending his unbeaten run in the contest despite some fearful abuse from the raucous crowd throughout a one-sided Saturday in New York.

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played some inspired golf in the afternoon fourballs as they took down Bryson DeChambeau and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who became first player since 1979 to lose four matches in the first four sessions at the Ryder Cup.

The last match of the day also went Europe's way, with Tyrrell Hatton finding form down the stretch having been brought in as a late replacement for Viktor Hovland, who is a concern for Sunday's singles as he struggles with a neck injury.

When Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick edged out Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns at the last, it ensured that Europe will need just three points from Sunday's 12 singles to clinch the first away victory in the showpiece since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Saturday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

DeChambeau managed to get his first win of the week alongside Cameron Young in the top match, but that was the lone highlight for Team USA as Europe claimed another 3-1 win in the session.

McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood held off a late fightback from Harris English and Collin Morikawa to win 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Hatton won their fifth match together.

The unstoppable LIV Golf pairing also won 3&2 in a high-quality battle against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm pulling off a number of sensational shots along the way.

Scheffler and Russell Henley lost out to Bob MacIntyre and Hovland after a titanic battle in the final foursomes of this contest.

Saturday Fourballs: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Lowry defied the constant abuse from the crowd to hold off Justin Thomas and Cameron Young in a match marred by the unsavoury scenes from outside the ropes.

A number of unruly spectators were removed from the property, while McIlroy refused to putt on the 6th green until order had been restored in the galleries, forcing officials to bring in a battalion of state troopers to stifle the troublemakers.

But Lowry was fired up and took the Irishmen 2 ahead when he eagled the 4th and birdied the 5th, while McIlroy stepped up on the back nine in match of incredible tension.

Rose was also inspired in match 2, the quality of which can be explained by Scheffler and DeChambeau being a combined 9-under par for 16 holes and losing 3&2!

Rose was also involved in an altercation with DeChambeau's caddie, Greg Bodine, on the 15th green which escalated into a blazing row involving players, caddies and vice-captains en route to the 16th tee.

A clean sweep of the fourballs looked on the cards until JJ Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to earn him and Schauffele a 1up victory over Rahm and Sepp Straka, with Rahm losing his first match in fourballs or foursomes since 2018.

But the day finished on yet another high note for the visitors with Hatton making birdies at the final four holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, and after he and Fitzpatrick peppered the pin at the 18th, they snatched Europe's sixth win of another memorable day.

Here comes the beast

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele vs Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka (1*)

Jon Rahm has the honour in the third match. After a couple of waggles, Rahm unleashes another booming drive over the trees into the middle of the fairway.

Sepp Straka ends up in the first cut.

JJ Spaun goes down the left centre of the fairway.

Xander Schauffele also finds the short stuff.

17:58
Missed opportunity for USA

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (2)

McIlroy and Lowry are in for par.

Young has a chance to win the hole. It's low.

17:56
Justin Rose proves his class again

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau A/S Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (1)

Over at the 1st, Fleetwood burns the edge with his birdie putt.

Rose has his back, though, and knocks in his birdie.

As does Scheffler.

17:53
Poor from JT

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (2*)

A decent approach from Young lands at the back of the green. Decent look for birdie.

Thomas chunks his approach into the front bunker.

McIlroy knocks his inside Young. Lowry is slightly further away.

17:52
Advantage USA

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau vs Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (1*)

Fleetwood's approach flies past the hole and zips back. Looks like he'll have around 18 feet for his three.

Rose takes a big divot. That's better. About eight or nine feet.

The Europeans have two uphill birdie putts.

Scheffler? It's perfect. Three feet. It won't be conceded but surely that's a guaranteed birdie.

DeChambeau, from 36 yards, hits his approach to four feet.

17:49
Thomas good drive

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (2*)

Lowry goes up the right on the 2nd. McIlroy poses after hitting his tee shot - but he's gone the other way and is in the rough.

Young's ball looks as though it clipped a tree on the way down, but it's in an okay spot.

Thomas is the only player to find the fairway.

17:45
Second match begins

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau vs Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose (1*)

Justin Rose goes first and is quick to pick up his tee. Fairway.

Tommy Fleetwood, who now has a 6-0 record in foursomes, also finds the short stuff.

Exceptional tee shots.

Scottie Scheffler desperately needs a point. Will Bryson DeChambeau provide that emotional spark?

He too finds the fairway.

DeChambeau hits another missile.

17:41
Pars to start

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (1)

Lowry chips close. That's conceded for par.

Thomas barely breathes on his ball - it's a decent pace but misses left.

Boos as McIlroy addresses his putt from slightly closer. It grazes the edge.

Over to Young... he's missed!

17:36
Pressure on Europe

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (1*)

Lowry with a wedge and he fires it in low. It lands short and rips off the back of the green. Poor.

Thomas, from 84 yards, lands on the bank. Not great.

Young knocks his close. Pressure on Rory now... that looks like 15 feet down the hill for an opening birdie which you suspect he will need to tie.

17:29
And we're off

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young A/S Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry (1*)

Shane Lowry has the honour and finds the fairway. Rory McIlroy takes a more aggressive line and he absolutely loves  it. He lands around 30 feet from the front of the green.

Cameron Young, who has been brilliant at the Ryder Cup so far, follows McIlroy on a great line.

Justin Thomas acknowledges the crowd and hits another beauty.

Four balls on the short stuff.

17:20
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are on the tee

Huge boos ring out from the grandstand as Rory McIlroy struts to the first tee alongside Shane Lowry for the first match of the afternoon session.

17:06
Fourballs incoming

We're 20 minutes away from the fourballs session, when Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry will lead Europe out against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, who crushed Aberg and Hojgaard yesterday.

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler will seek his first win of the week alongside Bryson DeChambeau in a surprise pairing to many, and they'll take on the in-form English pairing of Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

16:58
Result: MacIntyre & Hovland beat Scheffler & Henley 1up

In a role reversal from the 17th tee, it's brilliant from Hovland and shocking from Scheffler on 18.

The world No 1 blocks his approach into trouble on the right, and Hovland finds the heart of the green from the rough.

Henley's chip is good, but not good enough and two putts is all Europe need for another win.

They take the session 3-1, and they now have a commanding 5-point lead in the Ryder Cup.

1757 JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele vs Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka

1813 Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay vs Viktor Hovland/Matt Fitzpatrick

16:46
Hovland goes from villain to hero at 17

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (17)

The tension in this last foursomes match is almost unbearable, and Hovland picks a bad time to hit his worst shot of the year!

He splices his tee shot to the wrong side of the green, leaving MacIntyre 90 feet from the hole.

Scheffler hits a beauty to 12 feet, but Henley misses the putt on the low side.

MacIntyre's putt from Wogan territory wanders 10 feet long and almost off the green, but Hovland makes amends for his tee shot with a sensational putt for the half.

16:34
MacIntyre and Hovland 1 up with 2 to play

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (16)

Scheffler and Hovland get their teams safely aboard the 16th green.

Henley scares the hole from 25 feet, while MacIntyre's birdie try from a few feet closer runs out of legs.

Hole halved, Europe keep their noses in front

16:31
Mutual respect for Fleetwood and McIlroy
16:21
Big saves on 15 in final match

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (15)

MacIntyre goes long with his approach from the rough at 15, and Henley then hits his fat from the fairway.

Scheffler's resulting 60-footer for birdie comes up 7 feet short, but Hovland then fluffs his third from the back of the green.

But MacIntyre rolls in a superb putt, and Henley matches to keep the deficit at 1 hole.

16:17
Result: Hatton & Rahm bt Schauffele & Cantlay 3&2

It's another point on the board for Europe, and their lead extends to 4 points.

Schauffele comes up short with his second to 16, and Rahm hits a cracker to 3 feet.

Cantlay can't make his 3, and Hatton wraps up the match.

USA 3.5 Europe 7.5

16:05
Chance missed for Rahm

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (15)

Hatton hits a quality second to 15 feet at the 15th, while Cantlay does well to find the green from the left rough.

Rahm has a chance to take Europe 3up, but it's a fraction off line and the US still have hope here.

16:02
Europe back ahead in match 4

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (14)

What a response from MacIntyre at the short 14th.

The Scot hits a superb tee shot to 6 feet after Henley's cautious effort.

Scheffler lags, and Hovland converts to take Europe back in front.

15:58
Result: McIlroy & Fleetwood beat English & Morikawa 3&2

Wow, what a finale in match 2, and it gets spicy along the way.

English drills a brilliant second to 8 feet to pile the pressure on McIlroy, who is in the right rough and close to the crowd.

The noise is relentless, and prompts McIlroy to back off and shout "Shut the **** up"!!

But what a response from Rory, who pings a magnificent shot to 3 feet.

Morikawa misses, and Fleetwood rolls in his putt to win the match.

15:55
Henley and Scheffler draw level

Henley/Scheffler TIED Hovland/MacIntyre (13)

Big moment at the 13th as Scheffler hits another dart in close after both teams laid up.

MacIntyre can't find the target after a misfire from Hovland, and Henley curls in a great putt to level the bottom match.

15:47
Clutch putt from Hatton

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (14)

Hatton and Cantlay both miss the green at the short 14th, and the best Rahm can do this time is a pitch to 8 feet.

But Hatton atones with a great putt under pressure, and a nice chip from the fringe from Schauffele sets up a good par save for the US pair.

15:42
USA fighting back in match 2

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (15)

McIlroy and Fleetwood are looking a little edgy right now as the American's win back-to-back holes.

McIlroy's putt for birdie from 20 feet is an inch or two off target, but English holes from 15 feet to get the U pair back to 2 down with 3 to play.
