Ryder Cup Day 2 scores: Sensational Europe on verge of historic win at Bethpage

A summary of an incredible second day of The 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where Luke Donald's Europe once again outplayed Team USA and stormed into a seven-point lead after dominating both Saturday sessions to stun the New York crowd.

Europe stand on the verge of Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black following another outstanding performance on day 2, opening up a commanding seven-point lead over a deflated Team USA.

Luke Donald's superstars won both of Saturday's sessions 3-1, with Rory McIlroy extending his unbeaten run in the contest despite some fearful abuse from the raucous crowd throughout a one-sided Saturday in New York.

Overall score: USA 4.5-11.5 Europe

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played some inspired golf in the afternoon fourballs as they took down Bryson DeChambeau and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who became first player since 1979 to lose four matches in the first four sessions at the Ryder Cup.

The last match of the day also went Europe's way, with Tyrrell Hatton finding form down the stretch having been brought in as a late replacement for Viktor Hovland, who is a concern for Sunday's singles as he struggles with a neck injury.

When Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick edged out Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns at the last, it ensured that Europe will need just three points from Sunday's 12 singles to clinch the first away victory in the showpiece since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Saturday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

DeChambeau managed to get his first win of the week alongside Cameron Young in the top match, but that was the lone highlight for Team USA as Europe claimed another 3-1 win in the session.

McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood held off a late fightback from Harris English and Collin Morikawa to win 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Hatton won their fifth match together.

The unstoppable LIV Golf pairing also won 3&2 in a high-quality battle against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm pulling off a number of sensational shots along the way.

Scheffler and Russell Henley lost out to Bob MacIntyre and Hovland after a titanic battle in the final foursomes of this contest.

Saturday Fourballs: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Lowry defied the constant abuse from the crowd to hold off Justin Thomas and Cameron Young in a match marred by the unsavoury scenes from outside the ropes.

A number of unruly spectators were removed from the property, while McIlroy refused to putt on the 6th green until order had been restored in the galleries, forcing officials to bring in a battalion of state troopers to stifle the troublemakers.

But Lowry was fired up and took the Irishmen 2 ahead when he eagled the 4th and birdied the 5th, while McIlroy stepped up on the back nine in match of incredible tension.

Rose was also inspired in match 2, the quality of which can be explained by Scheffler and DeChambeau being a combined 9-under par for 16 holes and losing 3&2!

Rose was also involved in an altercation with DeChambeau's caddie, Greg Bodine, on the 15th green which escalated into a blazing row involving players, caddies and vice-captains en route to the 16th tee.

A clean sweep of the fourballs looked on the cards until JJ Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to earn him and Schauffele a 1up victory over Rahm and Sepp Straka, with Rahm losing his first match in fourballs or foursomes since 2018.

But the day finished on yet another high note for the visitors with Hatton making birdies at the final four holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, and after he and Fitzpatrick peppered the pin at the 18th, they snatched Europe's sixth win of another memorable day.

14:12
Clutch from Cantlay

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm Tied (7)

Both pairs are in trouble at the 7th, but a clutch putt by Cantlay from 15 feet saves par for the US.

Hatton can't find the target from 10 feet, and this match is now all square

14:09
Hovland and MacIntyre double their lead

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (5)

It's looking better for Europe in the bottom match, and the American pair made a mess of the 5th.

They can't save par after a wayward drive from Scheffler, and they are now 2 down.

14:06
McIlroy and Fleetwood are flying

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (8)

Hunter Mahan is struggling to explain why English and Morikawa are back together this morning, and you can see why he's confused.

Morikawa's tee shot to the short 8th comes up short and finds the drink, Fleetwood found the heart of the green, and McIlroy's super lag wins another hole.

14:03
Bryson strikes, Aberg follows him in

2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (9)

Scenes on the 9th green! DeChambeau bins a 15-footer for birdie after Fitzpatrick hit his second to 7 feet.

Aberg now has a putt to tie the hole, but he holds his nerve to sink it and stay 2 down.

13:57
Hatton bounces back

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (6)

Over at the 6th, Tyrrell Hatton is eyeing up a seven-footer for par.

He needs this to tie the hole after Cantlay holed his.

It catches just enough of the cup.

Well done, Tyrrell.

13:56
Scheffler putt drops

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (4)

This might get Scottie Scheffler going.

The 29-year-old drains a 17-footer to save a half at the 4th green.

13:50
Huge cheers over at the 8th

2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (8)

Europe concede DeChambeau's birdie putt.

Can Aberg match it with a birdie? Nope.

The US are finding a bit of momentum.

13:48
The Americans are finding something now

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (5)

Hole back to the US after Tyrrell Hatton hits a weak putt at the 5th.

13:43
Cam Young feeling it

1UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (8*)

Cam Young has the honour at the par-3 8th. It's another beauty. That looks like Bryson will have around three or four feet for birdie.

Fitzpatrick is posing at his tee shot. And why wouldn't he. His golf ball lands just outside of Young's.

13:41
Big putt drops for Rory McIlroy

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (5)

Rory McIlroy dumps his approach into the bunker over at the 5th.

Tommy Fleetwood has his back and splashes out nicely to around eight feet.

After watching the US clean up for par, McIlroy's putt just about catches enough of the cup to drop.

That's huge.

13:39
At last some red on the board

1UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (7)

Both teams are scrambling for par here over at the 7th green.

Fitzpatrick goes first and leaves it in the jaws.

Cam Young rolls in his par putt from four feet to give the US a lead in the top match.

13:35
Short putt not conceded

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (3)

Are the mind games beginning already?

The European duo refuse to give Scottie Scheffler a three-foot putt to tie the hole over at the 3rd.

The World No.1 has no trouble knocking it in...

13:32
Patrick Cantlay answers

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (4)

Lovely approach from Jon Rahm over at the 4th.

Hatton rolls in another birdie putt.

Cantlay responds with a birdie of his own.

13:30
Rory McIlroy birdie

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (5)

The Europeans are playing phenomenal golf right now.

Rory McIlroy was sensational yesterday and he's hitting all the right notes for Luke Donald this morning.

The Northern Irishman drains a 20-footer at the 5th to extend their lead.

That's four birdies in a row.

13:25
Robert MacIntyre!

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (2)

A disastrous start from the US has just got worse.

Robert MacIntyre drains a huge birdie putt at the 2nd to take the lead in the fourth and final match of the morning foursomes.

Europe are now leading in three out of four matches.

13:23
Bullet dodged

DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (6)

Decent putt from Young, but it ends up about three feet past the hole.

The US commentary team want that putt to be conceded, but Fitzpatrick and Aberg won't have it.

Fitzpatrick eyes up his putt from seven feet... but it starts left and doesn't move.

Chance missed.

Bryson tidies up.

13:18
Decent shot from Aberg

DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (6*)

Over at the 6th, Matthew Fitzpatrick has hit a booming drive that catches the ridge and scoots all the way down the hill.

Ludvig Aberg watches Bryson DeChambeau come up short.

The Swede's approach is right over the flag. Decent chance here for Fitzpatrick.

13:16
Hatton on a role

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (3)

A fine approach at the par-3 3rd is converted by a pumped-up Tyrrell Hatton.

Fair to say he loved that.

Schauffele also hit a lovely tee shot. After a few shuffles, Patrick Cantlay converts to tie the hole.

13:15
Hole halved

DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (5)

The solid pars on the 5th hole for this group.

13:14
Two birdies

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (4)

Collin Morikawa chips close over at the par-5 4th. That's conceded.

Tommy Fleetwood plays a delightful chip to about four feet.

Rory McIlroy tidies up to retain Europe's advantage.

13:11
First hole halved

Henley/Scheffler A/S Hovland/MacIntyre (1)

As expected, Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland both make their short birdie putts at the 1st.

13:09
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are on a mission

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (2)

Tyrrell Hatton drops a birdie putt over at the 2nd after a delightful approach from Jon Rahm.

Cantlay's approach was also decent, but Schauffele misses.

Rahm and Hatton are now 2UP.

13:06
Superb from Russell Henley

Henley/Scheffler A/S Hovland/MacIntyre (1*)

Wedge in hand, Russell Henley takes aim over at the 1st. It's delightful. That's a birdie.

Can Bob MacIntyre respond? Oh my goodness. Yes he can. That spins back to about four feet.

We have fireworks.

13:02
Tommy Fleetwood can't stop, won't stop making birdies

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (3)

Collin Morikawa goes first over at the 3rd. A decent effort burns the edge.

Tommy is much closer after Rory hit a superb tee shot over the top of the flag.

A 10-foot birdie putt drops.

Europe are now up in two matches.

13:00
Big day for Scottie Scheffler

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre (1*)

Big day for Scottie Scheffler today. The top-ranked golfer didn't register a single point yesterday.

He has been sent back out with Russell Henley.

Viktor Hovland has the honour and, after a few waggles, rips his drive down the middle. What a great tee shot.

Scheffler responds. Fairway found.
