Ryder Cup Day 2 scores: Sensational Europe on verge of historic win at Bethpage

A summary of an incredible second day of The 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where Luke Donald's Europe once again outplayed Team USA and stormed into a seven-point lead after dominating both Saturday sessions to stun the New York crowd.

Europe stand on the verge of Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black following another outstanding performance on day 2, opening up a commanding seven-point lead over a deflated Team USA.

Luke Donald's superstars won both of Saturday's sessions 3-1, with Rory McIlroy extending his unbeaten run in the contest despite some fearful abuse from the raucous crowd throughout a one-sided Saturday in New York.

Overall score: USA 4.5-11.5 Europe

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played some inspired golf in the afternoon fourballs as they took down Bryson DeChambeau and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who became first player since 1979 to lose four matches in the first four sessions at the Ryder Cup.

The last match of the day also went Europe's way, with Tyrrell Hatton finding form down the stretch having been brought in as a late replacement for Viktor Hovland, who is a concern for Sunday's singles as he struggles with a neck injury.

When Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick edged out Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns at the last, it ensured that Europe will need just three points from Sunday's 12 singles to clinch the first away victory in the showpiece since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Saturday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

DeChambeau managed to get his first win of the week alongside Cameron Young in the top match, but that was the lone highlight for Team USA as Europe claimed another 3-1 win in the session.

McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood held off a late fightback from Harris English and Collin Morikawa to win 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Hatton won their fifth match together.

The unstoppable LIV Golf pairing also won 3&2 in a high-quality battle against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm pulling off a number of sensational shots along the way.

Scheffler and Russell Henley lost out to Bob MacIntyre and Hovland after a titanic battle in the final foursomes of this contest.

Saturday Fourballs: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Lowry defied the constant abuse from the crowd to hold off Justin Thomas and Cameron Young in a match marred by the unsavoury scenes from outside the ropes.

A number of unruly spectators were removed from the property, while McIlroy refused to putt on the 6th green until order had been restored in the galleries, forcing officials to bring in a battalion of state troopers to stifle the troublemakers.

But Lowry was fired up and took the Irishmen 2 ahead when he eagled the 4th and birdied the 5th, while McIlroy stepped up on the back nine in match of incredible tension.

Rose was also inspired in match 2, the quality of which can be explained by Scheffler and DeChambeau being a combined 9-under par for 16 holes and losing 3&2!

Rose was also involved in an altercation with DeChambeau's caddie, Greg Bodine, on the 15th green which escalated into a blazing row involving players, caddies and vice-captains en route to the 16th tee.

A clean sweep of the fourballs looked on the cards until JJ Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to earn him and Schauffele a 1up victory over Rahm and Sepp Straka, with Rahm losing his first match in fourballs or foursomes since 2018.

But the day finished on yet another high note for the visitors with Hatton making birdies at the final four holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, and after he and Fitzpatrick peppered the pin at the 18th, they snatched Europe's sixth win of another memorable day.

Result: DeChambeau/Young bt Fitzpatrick/Aberg 4&2

It's all over in the top match. The European pair can't find the birdie they need to extend the contest, and DeChambeau has his first win of the week.

15:38
More scrappy stuff at 13

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (13)

We've seen some really average golf at the long 13th today, and match 3 is the latest to be halved in messy pars.

A couple of poor second shots, two so-so chips and after Cantlay's putt was signalled a wide, his partner lips in the par putt to stay 2 down.

15:35
Stunner from Scheffler, but Hovland responds!

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (12)

After a touch day yesterday, Scheffler looks much more like a world No 1 today and he stiffs his second to the 11th.

Hovland is closer but it the rough, but he hits a cracker to 5 feet and MacIntyre drops the putt to keep the European pair ahead.

15:28
Agonising for Aberg on 15

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (15)

Nice approach from Fitzpatrick sets up a great chance for birdie from 15 feet.

Aberg's putt looks likely to drop in the right side, but doesn't catch enough of the lip to drop.

Europe now need to win the last 3 holes to tie the match.

15:25
Rush of blood from Rory

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 3UP (14)

McIlroy gets too aggressive with his 20-footer for birdie at the short 14th and rolls it 5 feet by the hole.

Morikawa rescues a par for the home team, and Fleetwood misses his putt for the tie.

Europe 3 up with 4 to play.

15:24
MacIntyre mistake gifts hole to US

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (11)

MacIntyre's game has been a mixed bag today, and he misfires again at the 11th as he finds the rough from the fairway.

Hovland can't get his pitch on the green, and the American's a gifted a win in par.

15:20
Rahm and Hatton go 2 up

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (12)

What a shot from Jon Rahm ... again!

This time it's his long game that does the damage at the 12th, where he hammers his second from the rough to 5 feet.

The American's make par from distance, and Hatton ignores some predictable banter from the crowd to roll in the putt for the win.

15:16
Holes running out for English & Morikawa

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (13)

After the brilliance of the 11th and 12th, the long 13th is a scrappy affair in match 2.

It's halved in pars after neither team really threatens a birdie, and the Euros remain 4 up with 5 to play.

15:14
DeChambeau off target at 14

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (14)

Fitzpatrick comes up short at the par-3 14th after Young knocked his tee shot to 6 feet.

Aberg lags to save par, and DeChambeau's putt to go 4up is wide of the mark.

But the US are still 3up with only 4 to play in the top match.

15:12
Scheffler saves at the 10th

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (10)

It looks like Europe are going 3up at the 10th thanks to a nice solid par, with the Americans in trouble after a poor second from Scheffler.

Henley splashes out to 15 feet, but Scheffler makes up for his mistake with a great putt to tie the hole.

15:04
Brilliant again from Rahm

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (11)

Rahm is chipping again at the 11th after Hatton thinned his second from the bunker.

But it's another short-game masterclass from the Spaniard, and that rescues a half.

15:03
Scrappy stuff at the 13th

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (13)

Fitzpatrick and Young put their partners in trouble with wayward second shots to the long 13th.

Aberg knifes one over the green, and DeChambeau's punch from the pines also finds the rough.

But two excellent pitches later, the hole is halved in 5s.

14:56
High-quality golf in match 2

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (12)

Cracking approach from English at the 12th to 6 feet, but McIlroy's is even better!

Young and Fleetwood take care of business, and the US pair are running out of holes in this match.

14:54
Big escape for Europe at the 9th

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (9)

MacIntyre has wedge in hand in the middle of the fairway at 9, but he hits it long and left with the American's 20 feet short of the pin.

But Hovland pitches for 6 feet and Bob atones for his mistake to pop in the putt that keeps them 2up at the turn.

14:50
So close for Cantlay, great hands from Hatton

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (10)

Hatton borrows Rahm's Spanish hands and plays a deft chip from the rear rough at the 10th to save par.

Cantlay has a 15-footer for the win, but it shaves the right edge of the cup.

Bullet dodged for Europe there.

14:46
Fitzpatrick keeps Europe in Match 1

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (12)

DeChambeau hits a smooth wedge to 6 feet at the 12th after Aberg's second to 15 feet.

Fitzpatrick needs to find a putt, and yet again he's up to the challenge.

Young sinks his putt to halve the hole in birdies.

14:44
Fleetwood rattles the pin!

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (11)

Morikawa knocks one close at the 11th, but Fleetwood almost takes the pin out with his second shot.

It doesn't drop, but that's a kick-in birdie and English does well to hole from 6 feet for the half.

14:41
Massive moment for Hovland

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (8)

Bobby Mac finds the left edge of the green at the 8th, and Hovland's putt from 20 feet is perfect.

Scheffler can't match it from similar range, and the European pair are back to 2up.

14:37
Schauffele leaves it short!

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (9)

Big chance for the US to level match 3 after Hatton overcooks his approach and finds the rear rough, while Cantlay clips a wedge to 10 feet.

A pitch and putt saves par for Europe, but Schauffele leaves his birdie putt short!

14:34
Great save from McIlroy

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (10)

The US pair go close to pulling a hole back at the 10th after McIlroy pulled his second into the left rough.

Fleetwood does well to chip to 6 feet, and McIlroy's nerve holds once again.

14:32
Chance goes begging for Aberg

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (11)

Fitzpatrick sets up a good look at birdie with a good wedge to 12 feet, while Young hacks one out of the cabbage to 30 feet.

DeChambeau coaxes his putt down the hill to gimme distance, but Aberg's putt for the win drifts right.

14:27
Henley halves the deficit in match 4

Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (6)

It's a see-saw battle in the bottom match, and after Hovland misses the green with his approach, Scheffler knocks his to 7 feet.

Henley rolls in the birdie putt for the win, and Europe's lead is just 1.

14:22
Oh Jon Rahm, you can't do that!!

Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (8)

Jon Rahm has already had a few "Shot of the Ryder Cup" contenders, but this one is next level.

Hatton pulls his tee shot way left at the short 8th and the ball hangs on the lip of the bunker.

Wayne Riley reckoned 30 feet would be a good result for Rahm's pitch, and he's only gone and binned it for birdie.

Schauffele's pitch from the left rough misses, and the European pair are back in front!

14:20
Mistakes galore at the 10th

3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (10)

DeChambeau hits a woeful second to the 10th and puts his partner in deep trouble, but Aberg's shot is even worse and finds the lip of the bunker.

Fitzpatrick can only hack out to 20 feet with the ball at chest height, and that's a bogey for Europe.

Young sets up a par with a neat escape, and the US are 3 up in the top match.

14:18
Fleetwood Mac stay 4 up at the turn

English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (9)

McIlroy has a chance to take Europe's top pairing 5 up heading to the back nine, but his 20-footer for birdie wanders across the face of the hole.

Still, 4 up after 9 holes is a decent start!
