Rory McIlroy takes an iron off the 5th tee box and finds the middle of the fairway. His approach from 146 lands pin high, but rips back.
He'll have a 30-footer for a birdie.
From the left rough, Schauffele's approach is better.
His golf ball lands on the right side of the green and curls round the flag.

After a delightful drives, both players find the traps next to the green with their approaches.
McIlroy splashes out and, despite having lots of spin, his golf ball just keeps on going.
He hits an aggressive putt and it trundles on by about four feet but he tidies up for par.
Schauffele is closer with his birdie putt but it curls away at the last second.

Grim stuff from the former Masters champion today, who has dropped four shots in his first seven holes.
Jon Rahm has just arrived at Oakmont alongside his wife Kelley Cahill.
The Spaniard is currently in a share of 23rd place alongside 13 others.
Rahm tees off at 1.29pm with Canada's Nick Taylor.

Both players hit magnificent drives down the par-5 4th.
McIlroy is a few yards in front of the American.

Rory McIlroy finds the fairway with his tee shot and sends a 9-iron towards the green. It looks good in the air, but takes a heavy bounce and scoots into the rough.
The Northern Irishman leaves himself just inside 10 feet for par, but hits a dreadful putt.
He looks miffed.
Schauffele has a decent look at birdie but it curls left of the cup. Par.

The 2022 US Open champion is under par through seven holes.
Fitzpatrick's solitary birdie of the day arrived at the long par-5 6th where he rolled in a 31-footer.
McIlroy +6, Schauffele +6 (2)
Rory McIlroy's tee shot at the 2nd just catches the rough on the right side of the fairway.
It's not gobbled up, though, and he's able to find the green.
He's 44 feet away, though, but manages to two-putt for par.
Schauffele has an okay look for birdie from 16 feet, but it doesn't drop.

McIlroy goes way left in the rough.
Schauffele splits the fairway.
Both make par.

Barbaree Jr is also +3 thru 3 holes after making a double on the 3rd.
McIlroy and Schauffele will head to the 1st tee in half hour.

Philip Barbaree Jr returned bright and early this morning to make the cut on the number at 7-over par.
It marks his first made cut in a major.
He faced a tense five-footer on his final hole at the par-4 9th.
But he duly sent it home.
Look what it meant to him.

Barbaree Jr is understood to be good pals with 36-hole leader Sam Burns.
He's now headed down the 1st hole with a marker to start the third round.
McIlroy starts the third round nine shots off the pace. Will he get himself back in the hunt for a second career US Open title?
The Northern Irishman cut a frustrated figure in the second round, albeit making a birdie on the final hole to ensure he was here for the weekend.
McIlroy tomahawked his iron on the 12th and then smashed a tee box marker on the 17th.
He then shunned the media for a sixth consecutive major round.
McIlroy is out alongside two-time major champion Xander Schauffele at 10.34am.

The first groups get underway in 30 minutes time.
The cut mark fell at 7-over par.
That's 10 shots behind 36-hole leader Sam Burns, who leads by one shot over JJ Spaun.
Burns and Spaun tee off at 3.35pm local time, which is 8.35pm for UK fans.
Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, who are both down at 6-over par, are out alongside one another at 10.34am.
Scottie Scheffler (4-over) joins Cameron Young at 1.02pm.
