Scheffler +5 (1)
Simply shocking stuff from Scottie.
He split the opening fairway and he looked in prime position to setup a chance for birdie.
Scheffler found the heart of the green to some 35 feet but then inexplicably three-putted for bogey.
He left his first putt five feet short.
Then missed the par save on the right.
Awful start.
McIlroy +8 (11)
Bogey for Rory at the par-4 11th.
Very nearly a double.
McIlroy's bogey putt from five feet curls in on the right side.
It's just not happening for Rory.
Scheffler +4
Scheffler splits the opening fairway.
The World No.1 needs a low one today in order to get back in the hunt for a first US Open title.
Scheffler worked hard on his game on the range last night with his coach Randy Smith.
He looked agitated and clearly frustrated that he had fallen seven shots off the pace.
Anyway, today is a new day.
Let's see what Scottie can do...
McIlroy +7 (10)
It's a first birdie of the round for McIlroy at the par-4 10th.
He pinches his lips and raises his ball to the crowd, but he looks a defeated man.
McIlroy to 7-over and 10 back.
Spieth +6 (2)
Jordan Spieth makes an adventurous bogey at the par-4 2nd.
His tee shot goes left and he can only advance his ball forward to more rough on the right side of the fairway.

Davis +18 (14)

But it's gone downhill dramatically since then.

His approach finds the rough and he can't save par from 15 feet.
Spieth +5, Im +5 (1)
Jordan Spieth finds his golf ball in the left rough and manages to find the middle of the green at the first.
His birdie attempt lacks juice, though, but it will be a safe par.

Both players find the fairway bunker with their first tee shots.
McIlroy +7, Schauffele +4 (7)
Xander Schauffele uses the slope on the 7th green perfectly and sets up a great opportunity for birdie.
McIlroy pays the price for missing his spot and his golf ball rolls off the green.
He's got no green to work with so elects to go sideways and use the slope again. It's okay, but he has nine feet for par.
Will he save? Yes!
Schauffele has no issues with his short birdie putt and makes another move up the leaderboard.

They are out at 12.18pm.
McIlroy +7, Schauffele +5 (6)
Rory McIlroy yet again faces a tester for par at the 6th.
His birdie attempt rolls by about four or five feet, but he manages to find the right edge of the cup with the comebacker.
As expected, Schauffele makes his birdie.
McIlroy +7, Schauffele +6 (6*)
Xander Schauffele will be moving up the leaderboard, we presume, very shortly.
The American knocks his tee shot at the par-3 6th to a matter of inches.
